Partial Hospitalization
Drug Treatment Centers Virginia

With West Virginia recently being ranked as the state with the highest overdose related deaths according to the Trust for America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, addiction treatment programs are essential. Among the numerous treatment choices available to addicts is the partial hospitalization program.

Partial hospitalization explained

It is an intensive therapeutic clinical service designed to treat patient with substance use disorder often referred to as day treatment or day care. The patient should not be a threat to themselves or others to be considered from this program over an inpatient rehab program. A patient will usually be required to come in for treatment a minimum of five days a week, usually seven days a week, and spend a longer time at the rehab center than in outpatient programs.

It is a stand-alone treatment method ideal for addicts with addictions that require treatment but they still need to attend to their work or school duties among others. The patient should not require around-the-clock care in order to be eligible for the program. It is also often used by patients directly after an inpatient detox program or medical detox. It offers the benefits of independent living along with the benefits of intensive treatment. It is less intensive as an inpatient program that requires residence in a rehab and more intensive than an outpatient program that requires as little as three days a week attendance in some cases.

What is included in a partial hospitalization program?

Rehab centers tend to differ slightly in their programs but they are all similar in what they offer addicts in the form of treatment. A patient will begin with an assessment period where they will talk about their drug or alcohol history to establish the lengths and severity or their addiction. This is also done to explore possible mental conditions that could be triggering substance abuse. A personalized treatment plan is then set into motion where patients will spend time with certified therapists and addiction specialists. Common forms of therapy in a partial hospitalization program include group and individual therapy, psychiatric treatment, medication administration and aftercare plans.

Goals

By the end of the program, various goals should be accomplished in the patient’s recovery process. The following highlights the key goals of this type of treatment:

  • Patients are assisted with the abstinence from drugs and alcohol through relapse prevention strategies as well as behavioral modification.
  • Psychiatric disorders are dealt with that often co-occur with substance use disorder. This can include a medication regimen that is aimed at restoring balanced mental function.
  • A patient is made to understand that if they are involved in environments that are not conducive to a substance-free lifestyle, abstinence becomes difficult. Patients are held to establish the correct environments at home and in their social life so that relapse can be avoided.
  • The stress and anxiety that a person may feel is explored and alternative methods of coping are taught to the patient. This helps the patient to understand why they abuse drugs and alcohol, ultimately helping them avoid future relapse.

Post-treatment aftercare

Many recovering addicts benefit from sober living environments. These are houses where a patient can stay when they lack the support they need in their home environment. Patients are also taught the importance of attending support group meetings such as the NA and AA ones held on a regular basis. The meetings can be excellent places to socialize with other people who have similar life experiences as well as strengthen the individual’s own resolve to stay abstinent.
